South African-born, Mike is an architect and specialises in healthcare design. In 1989, he founded Nightingale Associates with the prime objective of promoting design excellence as the way to best satisfy client needs. The award winning firm now has a staff of 250, working from six UK studios and one in Cape Town. Nightingale Associates is part of the IBI Group, a worldwide practice based on commissions in urban planning, architecture, transport and communications technology.
Mike was a founder member of Architects for Health and the RIBA Health Client Forum. He was the author of Better by Design, distributed as a design guide to all UK healthcare Trusts in 1994. He was the external examiner for the Medical Architectural Research Unit at South Bank University, London for three years, and a DoH Design Review panellist.
Mike leads Nightingale THiNK, the firmâ€™s research, development and innovation service, dedicated to finding and promoting new design solutions in the fields of healthcare, education and science. The key focus points for THiNK are: sustainability; adaptable and flexible design; the application of new technologies to design and collaborative research to improve outcomes for patients, pupils and scientists.
As a committee member for the International Academy of Design and Health, Mike is very interested in promoting fruitful collaboration between people facing similar healthcare challenges around the world. The Mike Nightingale Fellowship has recently been established as a vehicle to act as a catalyst between the UK and South Africa in this respect.
In 2012 I founded the Mike Nightingale Fellowship to CHANGE LIVES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. We work in Hout Bay South Africa. see www.mikenightingalefellowship.org I am also building eco houses in the UK.
